This Week at West Intermediate

Parents, here is your news for this week at WI...

  • Today we had a Run, Hide, Fight Security Drill. This afternoon, an announcement of an Intruder on Campus drill was made and teachers, based on the location of the hypothetical intruder, made the decision to either run, which means they leave their classroom for a safer location; hide, which means they shelter in place where they are and sit silently; or fight, which means students would prepare to fight back after barricading themselves into the classroom or wherever they are, with whatever they have within reach. If the latter option is chosen by the teacher, the students typically wad up paper rather than gathering books and other items. Whatever the choice, the teacher then discusses with the students why they chose that option and how to remain safe at school. Drills, of course, are a part of what we do at school. Although they can be quite disconcerting to adults, kids are quite used to them and they are really just one more thing. However, we encourage you to talk with your child about the drill and any anxieties they may have about safety. Drills typically make students feel safer, but if they have concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Shaw. We are always happy to discuss safety with students or parents. If you'd like more information related to the Run, Hide, Fight drills, you can access the information at this link.
  • Please remember that tomorrow is Picture Retake Day!! Students wishing to take retakes should bring their picture packet to return, if they have it. Students who were absent  will be able to take retakes as well for the yearbook.
