This year, Algebra and Financial Literacy teacher, Mrs. Cogan, won Teacher of the Year in the Alt-Ed building with her kind heart and loving spirit. As one of her students, Braiden, says, “she’s an overall great teacher.”
Mrs. Cogan prefers coffee over tea, fall over spring, and the ocean over the lake.
Mrs. Cogan’s is in her 8th year teaching, and 7th year at Bixby. She says that she is a teacher because she always wanted to be one. She also remembers being a student and having teachers she did not want to be like, and didn’t want other students to have the experiences she had with those teachers.
Mrs. Cogan is inspired by her faith, as well as a desire to live a life of love and demonstrate it for her students through her actions. She believes her best quality is easily liking people, and based on what her students say about her, Mrs. Cogan is also easy to like back.
Braiden describes Mrs. Cogan as kind, and another one of her students, Johnny, feels inspired by Mrs. Cogan to do well in class.
Johnny notes that he and his classmates are “always doing different types of activities” in class.
Mrs. Cogan believes that a good teacher is one who “work[s] themselves out of a job,” meaning they do so well teaching their subject that students can do it themselves.
Our Alternative Education department is lucky to have such a caring and patient teacher. Congratulations Mrs. Cogan!
