Spartan Families & Staff,

After continued and careful assessment of road conditions, campus readiness, and our ability to safely operate transportation services, Bixby Public Schools will remain in Distance Learning on Wednesday, January 28. This includes the cancellation of all athletics, activities, and practices. Any exceptions will be communicated directly from coaches.

Important Distance Learning Reminders:

  • The BPS Distance Learning Guide can be viewed here.

  • Please refer to yesterday’s emails from teachers and schools for the distance learning schedule and links to necessary tech support if needed.

  • Google Meets are not required, and students are not penalized for non-attendance.

  • Credit is given for completed work.

  • Students will be given ample time upon return to school to submit assignments and receive credit.

Helpful Insight:

Safety remains our top priority. Clearing and preparing campuses for the safe arrival and dismissal of students and staff is an enormous undertaking, particularly following prolonged winter weather and freezing temperatures. Our district team has been out and about assessing the status of side roads and school sites. Main traffic roads are in good shape, such as Memorial. As you can see, other conditions are certainly not ideal.

In addition, transportation plays a critical role in our decision-making. To put this into perspective, nearly 60% of students are assigned to a bus route, and we typically transport approximately 50% of our student population each day, covering close to 1,500 miles each morning and again in the afternoon. Although main roads are much improved, many of our neighborhood streets and bus stop locations remain hazardous. When we are unable to ensure safe transportation and campus access, we must make the difficult decision to close school.

While this is never an easy call, it is a call based on safety. We are hopeful that our clearing work at sites and neighborhood roads will improve so that we will be able to welcome students and staff back to school in person soon. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and provide an update on Wednesday evening regarding the status of school on Thursday.

Thank you for your continued flexibility, understanding, and partnership as we prioritize the safety of our school community.

Stay safe and warm,

Lydia Wilson
