School Safety

Hello BPS employees and families,

After diligent work with law enforcement Friday, we were happy that all students got home safely without incident in our schools, just as we expected. As a means to review and inform you of yet another reported post, I’d like to share the following information with you:

We had a tip come into Bixby Police Dept near midnight on Thursday, learned about it on Friday morning at BPS, took our measures, and by Friday evening we got word (from our truly dedicated police department) that they had identified the Instagram account owner and were taking action on the posted threat. They did an outstanding job addressing this incident.

Internally, we are de-briefing and filling any gaps we found in our processes. And just when we thought we had “wrapped up” one incident, another one arose.

By Friday night, I learned of another threatening Instagram post – but not necessarily to Bixby schools. There is no mention of who is at risk in this post. A Bixby student got the post from a friend who saw it, and the family reported it to police immediately. It was then reported to BPS as well. I have talked with our police department several times already. The post itself mentions very specific actions related to a school shooting, but it does not say where (or if it is even meant for Bixby schools at all).  So PD is working with the FBI on it, we are devising a plan for safety at our schools (just in case it is meant for BPS). I am hopeful that law enforcement will be able to identify the author of this threatening post and intervene accordingly.

BPD and BPS are both extremely proud of our Bixby students and their families for reporting to us so promptly. There are several Bixby families who took that responsibility seriously, and we appreciate it. It is helpful to share info with authorities, not just repost or share on social media!

At this time, school will be in session on Monday and we will again be diligent regarding safety, but do not yet have any reason to believe we will need to go to lockdown mode. Should anything further develop, I will let share that information. We appreciate your cooperation.
