The Bixby School District Board of Education voted unanimously on Thursday, March 15, 2018, to appoint Rob Miller, Assistant Superintendent of Sand Springs Schools, as the new Superintendent of Schools for Bixby Public Schools, beginning no later than July 1, 2018.

The Bixby Board was committed to a rigorous superintendent search process and with selecting a top quality administrator with a strong record of successful educational leadership. BPS contracted with the Oklahoma State School Boards Association (OSSBA) to help conduct the search. BPS conducted a staff and patron survey to consider what attributes all stakeholders were looking for in our next superintendent. There were 1,050 respondents to the survey. The top three attributes expressed by patrons were: 1) Experience as an OK Superintendent with a proven record of success, 2) Inspires trust and has high levels of self-confidence and optimism, and 3) Models high standards of integrity and personal performance. The Board believes Mr. Miller embodies all three of these attributes and much more.

Applications were taken from January 24 to February 16. The position received 36 applications from well qualified candidates. After careful consideration and many hours of document review, interviews, as well as reflection and deliberation, Board President, Amanda Stephens stated, “The Board is confident that Mr. Miller is the best person to lead our district as we work toward the common goal of providing the best possible education for the children of Bixby Public Schools.”

Miller has 25 years of experience in public education. Prior to his current assignment, Miller previously served as a teacher and administrator in Jenks and Tulsa. As a teacher at Jenks East Middle School in 1999, Miller was selected as the Jenks District Teacher of the Year and a Jenks Vision of Excellence Award recipient. Mr. Miller also served for 11 years as principal of Jenks Middle School. In 2014, he was honored as the Oklahoma Middle School Principal of the Year by the Cooperative Council of School Administration (CCOSA) and was a finalist for the 2015 National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) National Principal of the Year. He also received the Advocate for Academic Freedom Award from the Oklahoma Education Association (OEA) in 2014.

Before becoming an educator, Mr. Miller served ten years as an artillery officer in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. Rob and his wife, Anna, have five adult children and two young grandchildren, one of whom will also become a Bixby Spartan when he begins pre-kindergarten in a few years.

Miller said, “I appreciate the confidence the Bixby Board of Education has placed in me. I am ready to work with the Bixby Education Community to continue the outstanding efforts already happening in the District and accelerate our progress to ensure all students have the opportunity to graduate ready for success in whatever path they choose.”

During the superintendent search process, the Board appointed Bixby Central Elementary Principal, Lydia Wilson, as Interim Superintendent.  Wilson will continue to serve until Miller’s arrival to the district and will work with Miller for a smooth leadership transition.
