Bixby’s Girls Roll Past Visiting Muskogee

By Ron Holt

With 10 players contributing points, Bixby High’s Lady Spartans wasted little time taking control early against visiting Muskogee in coasting to a 69-22 Frontier Valley Conference victory at Whitey Ford Field House last Tuesday night (Jan. 16).

Bixby, 12-3 on the season and ranked 12th in Class 6A, will be challenged this coming week as the Lady Spartans visit 19th-ranked Jenks on Tuesday (Jan. 23) and entertain second-ranked Bartlesville Friday (Jan. 26).

The Lady Spartans were focused from the start against Muskogee as they built up a 23-3 first quarter lead and held a 37-4 halftime advantage. Bixby scored 16 straight points before the Lady Roughers scored on a conventional three-point play with 2:10 remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Spartans reeled off 14 points before Muskogee converted one of two free throws with 18 seconds left to make it a 37-4 game at intermission. Bixby didn’t cool off after halftime as junior Dariann Myles sank a three-pointer to open the third period and senior Maddie Bittle followed with five straight points for a 45-10 Lady Spartan lead midway through the quarter.

Leading 54-13 after three quarters, Bixby head coach Tina Thomas played numerous reserves the remainder of the game.

“I told the girls to play for the girls behind them and to help get them as much playing time as they could. They embraced that and were unselfish,” Coach Thomas said. “I was really proud of their effort and their performance.

“It’s good for morale to get to play a lot of people … those kids work so hard every day, too. Muskogee is having a down year and we knew that but I was pleased with the way the girls played,” she added.

Bixby posed for pictures Wednesday and spent Thursday and Friday watching film and fine-tuning its game in preparation for the upcoming tests.

Bittle led the Lady Spartans’ balanced attack with 19 points – 14 in the first half. Sydnee Schovanec chipped in with 10 points, followed by Myles with nine points, Sarah Tyree with eight, Savanna Stout, Kenedy Brown and Cailin Masters with five each, Kate Bradley four points and Avery King and Sydney Page with two points each.

Following games with Jenks and Bartlesville, the challenges continue for the Lady Spartans as they visit ninth-ranked Sand Springs on Tuesday (Jan. 30) and host Owasso on Friday (Feb. 2).
