February 19 Season Update

Lady Spartans Prepare For Regional Test

 By Ron Holt

Despite losing a pair of games last week to end the regular season, Bixby’s Lady Spartans remain optimistic about their chances in the upcoming Class 6A East Regional, which starts Thursday, Feb. 23.

Bixby travels to Booker T. Washington’s gymnasium for a first round regional test against Norman North, starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Tulsa Washington hosts Muskogee in the other first round game. The two winners play for the regional title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25.

Ninth-ranked Norman North enters regional play with a 13-7 record. The Lady Timberwolves have been led by senior guard Kenna Sturgell this season.

“Norman North is competing well but they’re beatable,” Bixby head coach Tina Thomas said. “We are the No. 3 seed and they are No. 2 but I still feel good about the matchup and about my girls’ ability to compete.

“If our girls show up and are hitting on all cylinders they could be playing on Saturday. That’s what we’re planning on,” Coach Thomas added.

Bixby enters the playoffs on a losing note after dropping a 49-30 decision at Bartlesville last Tuesday (Feb. 14) and losing to powerful Sand Springs, 59-46, on Senior Night at Whitey Ford Field House last Friday (Feb. 17).

Sand Springs, which has lost once this season, went on a series of scoring outbursts to build up early leads. The Lady Sandites scored nine straight points midway through the first quarter for a 12-5 lead and outscored Bixby, 10-3 in the final 3:10 of the second quarter to capture a 29-14 halftime lead.

The Lady Spartans trailed 46-27 after three quarters and were behind 59-35 with four minutes left before scoring the final 11 points of the game.

Junior post player Sarah Tyree led Bixby in scoring with 16 points while Maddie Bittle contributed 15. Other Lady Spartan scorers included Dariann Myles with nine, Maddie Fuhr with three and Savanna Stout, Kennedy Brown and Avery King with one each.

“There is a reason they’ve only lost one game all year. They got a lot of tools in the shed,” Coach Thomas said of Sand Springs. “Give Sand Springs credit. They’re just good and burned us in transition and in offensive rebounding.

“We didn’t play crisp but I told the girls not to get too down because we have to get ready for Norman North. We still have a shot.”

Bartlesville used an 11-point first quarter and 20-point third quarter to record its second win of the season over the Lady Spartans last Tuesday. The Lady Bruins led 20-13 at intermission but outscored Bixby 20-10 in the third period to pull away for the win.

Bittle led the Lady Spartans in scoring with nine points while Tyree ended with eight and Stout seven. Other Bixby scorers included Brown with four and Kaylee Blankenship with two.

SENIOR NIGHT – Between the girls and boys’ games last Friday night, Bixby honored senior basketball players and their parents. Lady Spartans honored were Kyndal Pirtle, Cassidy Sloan and Maddie Fuhr.
